What kind of destination Temuco is
Temuco es la capital de La Araucanía y el corazón urbano del mundo mapuche. No se visita por grandes monumentos coloniales —la ciudad se fundó recién en 1881— sino por lo que la rodea y la atraviesa: bosque nativo dentro del casco urbano, ferias y mercados donde llega el campo, y una cultura viva que se nota en la comida, la artesanía y el idioma. Es una ciudad de servicios, plana y caminable en su centro, ordenada en damero.
Temuco is the capital of La Araucanía and the urban heart of the Mapuche world. You don't come for grand colonial monuments —the city was only founded in 1881— but for what surrounds and runs through it: native forest inside the built-up area, fairs and markets where the countryside arrives, and a living culture felt in the food, the crafts and the language. It is a service city, flat and walkable at its core, laid out on a grid.

Its greatest asset for the traveller is its position. Temuco works as a base and gateway to the lake and volcano country: to the north-east lies Conguillío National Park with the Llaima volcano and its araucaria forests; to the south-east, Villarrica and Pucón beside the lake and the smoking volcano. Many visitors sleep and stock up in Temuco and head out by day into nature. In the city itself, the must-sees come down to the hill, the market, the square and a couple of museums.

With a single day in Temuco, run the day north to south and from less to more urban. Start early on Cerro Ñielol, when the forest is fresh and the views clear; come down for lunch at the Mercado Municipal food stalls; and close the afternoon walking Plaza Aníbal Pinto and the centre. It's a short route by distance and easily done on foot or by shared taxi.

Temuco has a temperate rainy climate, with over 1,100 mm of rain a year and the wettest months between May and August. Summer (December to February) is dry and mild, the best window for the hill and for lake and volcano trips. Autumn turns the native forest gold; winter is cool and wet, ideal for museums and covered markets; and spring arrives green and showery. In any season, pack a waterproof layer.

El centro de Temuco es plano y en damero, así que la mayoría de los puntos —Plaza Aníbal Pinto, Mercado Municipal, la entrada al cerro Ñielol— quedan a distancia de caminata. Para trechos más largos o para llegar al Museo Regional en Av. Alemania, los colectivos (taxis de línea con recorrido fijo) son la forma más práctica y barata de moverse; también hay micros y taxis. Downtown Temuco is flat and gridded, so most points —Plaza Aníbal Pinto, the Municipal Market, the entrance to Cerro Ñielol— are within walking distance. For longer hops or to reach the Regional Museum on Av. Alemania, colectivos (shared, fixed-route taxis) are the handiest and cheapest way to get around; there are also city buses and cabs. Confirm fares and routes locally, as they change.
