El operador necesita información concreta para enviar la ayuda correcta al lugar correcto. Antes de llamar, respira; luego entrega los datos de forma ordenada. Piensa en tres cosas: dónde, qué pasó y cuántos heridos.

The operator needs concrete information to send the right help to the right place. Before you call, take a breath; then give the details in order. Think of three things: where, what happened and how many injured.

• Dónde estás: dirección, calle y número, referencias cercanas y comuna (Temuco, Padre Las Casas, etc.). En zonas rurales, da kilómetros de ruta y puntos conocidos.Where you are: address, street and number, nearby landmarks and commune (Temuco, Padre Las Casas, etc.). In rural areas, give route kilometres and known points.
• Qué pasó: describe la situación en pocas palabras (accidente, incendio, persona inconsciente).What happened: describe the situation in a few words (accident, fire, unconscious person).
• Cuántos heridos y en qué estado: si respiran, si están conscientes, si sangran.How many injured and in what state: whether they're breathing, conscious, bleeding.
• Mantén la calma y habla claro; no cuelgues hasta que el operador te lo indique.Stay calm and speak clearly; don't hang up until the operator tells you to.
• Sigue sus instrucciones: pueden guiarte en primeros auxilios mientras llega la ayuda.Follow their instructions: they may guide you through first aid while help arrives.
• Si es seguro, envía a alguien a esperar y guiar a la ambulancia o a los bomberos.If it's safe, send someone to wait for and guide the ambulance or fire crew.

Cuándo usar cada número

When to use each number

¿Duda sobre a quién llamar? Accidente o persona enferma grave, 131 (SAMU). Fuego, escape de gas, rescate o un árbol caído sobre un cable, 132 (Bomberos, que en Chile son voluntarios y gratuitos). Delito, violencia, choque o riesgo de seguridad, 133 (Carabineros). Investigación de un delito ya ocurrido, 134 (PDI). Incendio en bosque, pastizal o matorral, 130 (CONAF), clave en una región tan forestal como La Araucanía. En muchos casos, cualquiera de estos servicios coordina con los demás, así que si te equivocas de número no pasa nada: explica la situación y te derivan.

Not sure who to call? Accident or seriously ill person, 131 (SAMU). Fire, gas leak, rescue or a tree fallen on a power line, 132 (Bomberos, who in Chile are volunteers and free). Crime, violence, a car crash or a safety threat, 133 (Carabineros). Investigating a crime that already happened, 134 (PDI). Fire in forest, grassland or scrub, 130 (CONAF), crucial in a region as forested as Araucanía. In many cases any of these services coordinates with the others, so if you dial the wrong one it's fine: explain the situation and they'll route you.

No todo es una emergencia del 131. Para una molestia que no puede esperar al día siguiente pero tampoco es grave —fiebre, un corte que quizá necesita puntos, un esguince—, fuera del horario de tu Cesfam acude a un SAPU o SAR de atención primaria, o a la urgencia de una clínica si tienes previsión privada. Para una receta que se acabó o un medicamento de noche, busca la farmacia de turno: en Chile siempre hay una farmacia de turno abierta, y la lista se publica a diario; puedes consultarla en el sitio de la autoridad sanitaria o preguntar en cualquier farmacia.

Not everything is a 131 emergency. For something that can't wait until tomorrow but isn't serious —fever, a cut that might need stitches, a sprain—, outside your Cesfam's hours go to a primary-care SAPU or SAR, or to a clinic ER if you have private cover. For a prescription you've run out of or medicine at night, look for the farmacia de turno: in Chile there's always an on-duty pharmacy open, and the list is published daily; check it on the health authority's site or ask at any pharmacy.

La Araucanía es una región sísmica y volcánica, así que vale la pena estar preparado. Chile tiene terremotos con frecuencia y la zona tiene volcanes activos como el Llaima y el Villarrica. La institución que coordina la respuesta ante emergencias y emite las alertas es SENAPRED; el monitoreo de los volcanes lo hace SERNAGEOMIN, que publica alertas técnicas por color (verde, amarilla, naranja, roja).

Araucanía is a seismic and volcanic region, so it pays to be ready. Chile has frequent earthquakes and the area has active volcanoes such as Llaima and Villarrica. The body that coordinates emergency response and issues alerts is SENAPRED; volcano monitoring is done by SERNAGEOMIN, which publishes technical colour alerts (green, yellow, orange, red).

• Sismos: durante el temblor, agáchate, cúbrete y afírmate; aléjate de ventanas y objetos que puedan caer. Si vives o estás en la costa y el sismo es fuerte y largo, no esperes aviso: aléjate hacia zonas altas por posible tsunami.Earthquakes: during the shaking, drop, cover and hold on; move away from windows and objects that could fall. If you live or are on the coast and the quake is strong and long, don't wait for a warning: head to high ground because of a possible tsunami.
• Erupciones: respeta el radio de seguridad y las evacuaciones que ordene la autoridad; sigue la alerta de SERNAGEOMIN para el Llaima y el Villarrica.Eruptions: respect the safety radius and any evacuations ordered by the authorities; follow SERNAGEOMIN's alert level for Llaima and Villarrica.
• Ten un kit de emergencia: agua, linterna, radio a pilas, botiquín, copias de documentos y algo de efectivo.Keep an emergency kit: water, a torch, a battery radio, a first-aid kit, copies of documents and some cash.
• Acuerda un punto de encuentro familiar y conoce las vías de evacuación de tu barrio.Agree on a family meeting point and know your neighbourhood's evacuation routes.

Carabineros o PDI: la diferencia

Carabineros or PDI: the difference

Ante un delito en curso, un accidente de tránsito o una situación de riesgo inmediato, llama a Carabineros al 133: es la policía uniformada que patrulla y responde en terreno. La PDI (Policía de Investigaciones), al 134, es la policía civil que investiga delitos ya cometidos —robos, fraudes, delitos complejos— y realiza peritajes. Si te acaban de asaltar y el ladrón huye, 133; si vas a denunciar un delito para que lo investiguen, la PDI o Carabineros según el caso. Para violencia intrafamiliar o contra la mujer existen además líneas de orientación especializadas del Estado.

For a crime in progress, a road accident or an immediate risk, call Carabineros on 133: they're the uniformed police who patrol and respond on the ground. The PDI (investigative police), on 134, is the plain-clothes force that investigates crimes already committed —robberies, fraud, complex offences— and does forensic work. If you've just been mugged and the thief is fleeing, 133; if you're reporting a crime to be investigated, the PDI or Carabineros depending on the case. For domestic or gender-based violence there are also specialised state helplines.
