El transporte público de Temuco tiene dos protagonistas: los colectivos y las micros. Entender la diferencia es casi todo lo que necesitas para moverte por la ciudad como un local, sin auto y gastando poco. Temuco's public transport has two protagonists: colectivos and micros. Understanding the difference is almost all you need to move around the city like a local, without a car and spending little. On top of that there are taxis and ride-hailing apps for when you want something more direct or travel at night.

Colectivos: la línea manda

Un colectivo es un taxi compartido que recorre una línea fija y numerada. El número de la línea va a la vista, en un cartel en el techo y en el parabrisas, y cada línea cubre siempre el mismo trayecto por las mismas calles. Se paga una tarifa plana por viaje, sin importar cuánto avances dentro del recorrido, y compartes el auto con otros pasajeros que suben y bajan por el camino.

A colectivo is a shared taxi that runs a fixed, numbered line. The line number is on display, on a sign on the roof and on the windscreen, and each line always covers the same route along the same streets. You pay a flat fare per trip, whatever the distance you travel along it, and you share the car with other passengers who get on and off along the way.

Cómo usarlo en la práctica: identifica la línea que pasa por tu destino (puedes preguntar a un local o al propio chofer), párate donde pasa esa línea, levanta la mano para que se detenga y sube si hay cupo. Pagas al chofer, normalmente al subir o al bajar, en efectivo. Para bajarte, avísale tu esquina con un poco de anticipación. Es la forma más rápida y usada de moverse dentro de Temuco, porque el auto no hace tantas paradas como un bus.

How to use one in practice: identify the line that passes your destination (you can ask a local or the driver), stand where that line runs, raise your hand to flag it down and get in if there's room. You pay the driver, usually on boarding or getting off, in cash. To get off, tell the driver your corner a little in advance. It's the fastest and most-used way to get around Temuco, because the car doesn't make as many stops as a bus.

Micros: los recorridos largos

Las micros son los buses urbanos. Cubren recorridos más largos que cruzan la ciudad de lado a lado y conectan con Padre Las Casas, al otro lado del río Cautín. Como los colectivos, muestran su recorrido o número y se toman en los paraderos o en la calle levantando la mano. Son la mejor opción cuando tu destino queda lejos del centro, en un sector residencial o fuera de las líneas de colectivo, y suelen ser algo más económicas para trayectos largos.

Micros are the city buses. They cover longer routes that cross the city end to end and connect with Padre Las Casas, on the far side of the Cautín River. Like colectivos, they display their route or number and are caught at stops or on the street by raising your hand. They're the best choice when your destination is far from the centre, in a residential district or beyond the colectivo lines, and they're often a bit cheaper for long trips.

Si recién llegas, la barrera no es el sistema sino saber qué línea sirve tu destino, porque no hay un único mapa oficial fácil de leer para el turista. La forma práctica es preguntar: en el hotel, en un negocio o al propio chofer, di adónde vas y te dirán qué colectivo o micro tomar. Ten la dirección anotada, prepara el efectivo antes de subir y, si es tu primera vez en una línea, avisa al chofer que te avise al llegar. En dos o tres viajes ya te manejas.

If you've just arrived, the barrier isn't the system but knowing which line serves your destination, because there's no single tourist-friendly official map. The practical approach is to ask: at your hotel, in a shop or to the driver, say where you're going and they'll tell you which colectivo or micro to take. Have the address written down, get your cash ready before boarding and, if it's your first time on a line, ask the driver to let you know when you arrive. Two or three trips in, you'll have the hang of it.

Para un salto por el centro o una ruta directa conocida, el colectivo es más rápido. Para cruzar toda la ciudad, ir a un barrio periférico o pasar a Padre Las Casas, la micro suele convenir. Si dudas, un colectivo te deja más cerca y con menos paradas; la micro te lleva más lejos por menos plata.

For a hop across downtown or a known direct route, the colectivo is faster. To cross the whole city, reach an outlying neighbourhood or head over to Padre Las Casas, the micro usually makes sense. If in doubt, a colectivo drops you closer with fewer stops; the micro takes you farther for less money.

Para llegar al Terminal Rodoviario con maletas, un colectivo o taxi es lo más cómodo; hay líneas que pasan cerca, pero con equipaje voluminoso el taxi evita apreturas. Al Aeropuerto La Araucanía (ZCO), a unos 20 km al sur, no llega el transporte urbano corriente: se usa traslado compartido, taxi o auto de arriendo. Calcula el tiempo con holgura en hora punta.

To reach the Terminal Rodoviario with bags, a colectivo or taxi is easiest; some lines pass nearby, but with bulky luggage a taxi avoids the squeeze. La Araucanía Airport (ZCO), about 20 km south, isn't served by ordinary city transport: use a shared transfer, taxi or rental car. Allow extra time at rush hour.

When you want to go straight to an address, travel with luggage or come back at night, a regular (non-shared) taxi and ride-hailing apps are the alternative. They cost more than a colectivo or micro, but take you door to door. Agree or confirm the price and, in the app, check the vehicle and plate before getting in.
