Getting home safely

Como en cualquier ciudad, cuida tus cosas y vuelve acompañado si puedes. La locomoción nocturna se reduce de madrugada: las micros dejan de circular temprano y los colectivos son la opción más habitual para volver tarde. As in any city, mind your belongings and head home with company when you can. Late-night transport thins out in the small hours: city buses stop running early and colectivos (shared taxis) are the usual way home late. En Chile la venta y el consumo de alcohol son legales desde los 18 años, y los locales pueden pedir cédula de identidad o pasaporte para confirmar la edad. Lleva un documento si aparentas menos. No está permitido beber en la vía pública, y conducir con alcohol se sanciona con rigor: si vas a beber, deja el auto y vuelve en colectivo o taxi.

In Chile buying and drinking alcohol is legal from age 18, and venues may ask for your ID card or passport to confirm age. Carry a document if you look younger. Drinking on the street is not allowed, and drink-driving is punished strictly: if you're going to drink, leave the car and go home by colectivo or taxi.

El sur de Chile es una de las cunas de la cerveza artesanal del país, y Temuco no es la excepción. La tradición cervecera de la región se apoya en el agua, el clima y una herencia de la colonización europea que quedó en el gusto local. The region's brewing tradition rests on the water, the climate and a legacy of European settlement that stayed in local taste. Today labels from Araucanía and the south share bars and breweries offering varied styles —pale, red, dark, hoppy and sometimes with local ingredients— usually alongside casual food. Ordering a local beer is almost a form of tourism.

Drinking in moderation and eating something as you go —a snack, some fries or a sharing board— is the local custom and the best way to last the night.

La noche parte relativamente temprano en comparación con Santiago y se concentra de jueves a sábado. En invierno, con la lluvia, el plan es de interior; en verano se abren terrazas y la ciudad se estira un poco más. Ir sin apuro y dejarse recomendar por la gente local suele dar los mejores resultados.

The scene is more about quality than quantity: you won't find big club districts, but neighbourhood spots where conversation, good beer and often music matter most. The night starts relatively early compared with Santiago and concentrates from Thursday to Saturday. In winter, with the rain, the plan is indoors; in summer terraces open and the city stretches out a little more. Going without a rush and letting locals recommend places usually gives the best results.
