Temuco concentra el retail moderno de toda La Araucanía en dos grandes centros comerciales: Mall Portal Temuco y Mall Plaza Temuco. Cada uno reúne bajo un mismo techo tiendas por departamentos, un supermercado grande, salas de cine, un amplio patio de comidas, bancos y decenas de locales de moda, tecnología, hogar, calzado, deporte y servicios. Para la ciudad y para las comunas vecinas son el punto de encuentro para comprar, comer, ver una película o simplemente pasar una tarde de lluvia bajo techo.
Temuco concentrates all of Araucanía's modern retail in two large shopping malls: Mall Portal Temuco and Mall Plaza Temuco. Each brings department stores, a large supermarket, cinema screens, a big food court, banks and dozens of shops for fashion, tech, home, footwear, sport and services under one roof. For the city and the surrounding communes they are the meeting point to shop, eat, catch a film or simply spend a rainy afternoon indoors.
Los dos malls funcionan con una fórmula muy parecida. Ambos tienen como tiendas ancla a las tres grandes cadenas chilenas por departamentos —Falabella, Ripley y Paris—, además de un supermercado, cine multisala, banca y una mezcla similar de marcas nacionales e internacionales. Por eso la oferta se solapa bastante, y en la práctica muchos temuquenses eligen por cercanía a su barrio o por qué tienda ancla prefieren, más que por diferencias grandes en el catálogo.
The two malls run on a very similar formula. Both use Chile's three big department-store chains —Falabella, Ripley and Paris— as anchors, plus a supermarket, a multiplex cinema, banking and a comparable mix of national and international brands. Because the offer overlaps so much, in practice many locals choose by whichever is closer to their neighbourhood, or by which anchor store they prefer, rather than by big differences in the catalogue.

Los dos centros comerciales están en el sector centro-poniente de Temuco, bien conectados con el resto de la ciudad y a corta distancia del centro histórico. Puedes llegar de varias formas según de dónde vengas y qué vayas a cargar.
Both malls sit in Temuco's central-western area, well connected to the rest of the city and a short distance from the historic centre. You can get there several ways depending on where you start and how much you plan to carry.
- Colectivo: varias líneas de taxis colectivos pasan por el sector o dejan cerca; es rápido y cómodo para una o dos personas.Colectivo (shared taxi): several lines pass through or drop off nearby; fast and convenient for one or two people.

Sobre los horarios: los malls chilenos suelen abrir todos los días con jornada continua desde la media mañana hasta la noche, con horario más largo el viernes y sábado y más corto los domingos y festivos. On hours: Chilean malls usually open every day with continuous hours from mid-morning until night, longer on Friday and Saturday and shorter on Sundays and holidays. The anchor stores and supermarket may open or close at slightly different times from the smaller shops, and on major holidays hours are cut back. The busiest times are weekend afternoons, the lunch hour and peak dates like December and March; for a calmer visit, go on a weekday morning.

Por eso, cuál elegir depende sobre todo del plan del día.
More than competing on catalogue, the two malls act as the region's big indoor shopping centre, a format that makes a lot of sense in Temuco's rainy climate: you can shop, have lunch and watch a film without getting wet, valuable between May and August. So which one to choose depends mostly on the plan for the day.

Conviene recordar que el mall no es la única opción de compras en Temuco. Y para productos frescos y típicos están los mercados. It's worth remembering the mall isn't the only shopping option in Temuco. The historic centre, around Plaza Aníbal Pinto and shopping streets like Bulnes, Manuel Montt and Portales, packs in street shops, arcades, banks, pharmacies and neighbourhood commerce, often at competitive prices and all on foot. And for fresh, typical products there are the markets. Many locals combine all three: the mall for branded retail, downtown for errands and the shopping street, and the feria for the pantry.
